So it has been a really long time since I have posted a new article on Sandy Reads. We are not gone. While I have been gone in the blogging world, we have been actively posting new videos on our youtube channel. For now, we are putting all of our energy into that and I will post some new articles as I am inspired to share something. I still love reading and learning about education and I am sure I will feel the urge to share some new things I've learned or tried. Recently, I've been reading Tumbling Over the Edge: A Rant for Children's Play by Bev Bos. While I do not need to read something to be persuaded about allowing children to play, there are a lot of good ideas in the book about community building.
In the book there is a mountain picture with kids on it. At the top there are isolated kids because they are still egocentric. As they move down the mountain they are getting older and at the bottom of the mountain is an entire community. I loved the significance of the imagery, but also enjoyed her explanation of community building. It talked about listening to children and expressing empathy toward them and their needs no matter how trivial they may seem because doing so now at this age will create empathetic adults that are responsible citizens in our society.
I encourage you to go over to our channel. We have diligently picked out some books to share for Halloween. My favorite Halloween addition this year is 10 Trick or Treaters by Janet Schulman. Comment below and share your favorite Halloween story.
